Gold Cup This Weekend in Edmonton...Tripleheader Weekend in Ontario.

London, Ontario (July 9, 2009) - Canada's most historic open wheel race takes the green flag tomorrow night. The Gold Cup was originally a pavement Supermodified race at Speedway Park in Edmonton, and featured drivers such as Billy Foster, Jim Malloy, Art Pollard, and the Sneva Brothers, Tom and Jerry.

Speedway Park was part of a large racing complex called Edmonton International Speedway, which closed in 1982 to make way for a housing development. This left the Edmonton area devoid of professional racing until 1991, when what is now known as Castrol Raceway opened. The Gold Cup name was revived that same year, this time to crown the champion of a dirt sprint car race. Participants in the "modern era" of the Gold Cup include Kasey Kahne, and former winners Gary Lee Maier and Jason Solwold.
