2008 Schedules Taking Shape
London, Ontario (January 7th, 2008) -
It seems that many tracks and racing organizations are getting organized and announcing their schedules - or at least tentative schedules - earlier and earlier each season, and that is definitely the case this season. Open wheel dates in Ontario that have already officially been announced include the special dates at Ohsweken, an ASCS Patriots event at Merrittville, as well the Southern Ontario Sprints schedule, which was released today. There are also tentative dates from the Auto Value Super Sprints, Empire Super Sprints, and the International Supermodified Association already published on their respective websites.
With dates for the bi-weekly sprint car class at Humberstone, the weekly sprint car class at Ohsweken, and the rest of the ASCS schedule from the Patriots and SoD divisions still unannounced, this season is already shaping up to be the busiest season of open wheel racing in Ontario since Supermodifieds last ran weekly at Delaware more than 30 years ago.
Some of the noteable events on the schedule so far include the ISMA Supermodifieds back at Cayuga for the first time since 2005, the World of Outlaws Sprints back at Ohsweken for 2 shows this year, and the Southern Ontario Sprints scheduled at Brockville Ontario Speedway for the first time and back at Humberstone after a year's absence.
ISMA may have set back the practice of releasing tentative schedules before all the contracts are signed, however, as a date at Kawartha was listed earlier this week - which has since been taken down - which would compete directly with the MSA/Oswego winged race on Classic Weekend at Oswego, NY. As it is, the presently listed Sunday date of that weekend says ISMA will be at Cayuga while the traditional Oswego Classic event will also be running. It remains to be seen whether this schedule is the same when the season starts, but in terms of bad PR, some damage has already been done, whether it is fair or not.
